History Harvest FAQs

History Harvests, also known as “Scan-a-Thons,” are events that allow historical institutions to collect community information and knowledge without community members parting with their treasured materials. At our History Harvests, Library staff will scan your photos, documents, etc. We’ll then give you your original back along with an archival-quality digital copy, and the library will retain one copy to preserve long-term and share on our Special Collections Catalog.

The library collects and preserves materials related to all aspects of Floyd County’s history. Staff carefully store and preserve physical and digital materials to ensure that they will be available for many years to come. When you share your photos, documents, and other items with the library, you are helping capture and save local history for future generations. You’ll also receive a free, archival-quality digital copy of your materials on a USB drive.

Bring photos, family records, letters, newspaper clippings, flyers, programs, and other documents related to the theme of the History Harvest. Please be aware that the library may not be able to scan published materials, such as books and magazines, due to copyright restrictions.

Library staff will carefully scan your materials using high-quality equipment and record any information you have about them (such as year of creation, names of people pictured, etc.). We’ll give you back your originals, along with an archival-quality digital copy. Then staff will upload a copy to our online Special Collections Catalog along with the information you provided, and preserve a “master copy” in our digital repository.

You will still own all rights associated with your materials. By completing the form to participate in the History Harvest, you give the Floyd County Library permission to digitize, reproduce, publicly display, and make materials available to researchers and the public.

If you’re interested in donating original materials to the Floyd County Library, please email indiana@nafclibrary.org or call 812-949-3527.
