10:00 AM in  Strassweg Auditorium

Please join us at the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at 10:00 AM as Teatro Tercera Llamada and playwright Carlos-Manuel present a bilingual children’s play based on La Cucarachita Martina, a Latino folktale. Martina, the little cockroach, finds a coin and decides to use it to buy make-up to make herself beautiful.

She, indeed, makes herself look beautiful and attracts many suitors. But Martina discovers that having beauty doesn’t mean she is loved for who and what she is but rather what she looks like, and she rejects all of the suitors for this reason. In the original story, she meets a shy mouse and they fall in love and marry. In this version, however, the story ends with Martina meeting Mr. Perez, the little mouse, and instead of marrying (since all stories don’t have to end in the girl getting married), the two become best friends because they have so much in common, including a love for reading.

Teatro Tercera Llamada is a non-profit company with the purpose of presenting plays in Spanish for the Spanish-speaking community of Louisville, KY and its surroundings. Co-founder Carlos-Manuel is a top Latino playwright from East Richmond Heights, California whose plays focus on social justice within the U.S./Latino experience.
