NEW ALBANY, In. – Help plant gardens that are inspired by books at the upcoming Book Gardens Volunteer Day on Saturday, April 22nd, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the New Albany-Floyd County Public Library. Through collaboration with Floyd County Extension Master Gardeners, the Book Gardens project combines an appreciation for plants, books, and learning.
Guests of all ages are welcome to join and help bring the Book Gardens project to life. No registration is required and all plants are provided. Guests are simply encouraged to bring gloves and extra tools.
Community members were asked to use their imagination and think of books that could be transformed into creative gardens. Over 100 library patrons and guests took an online survey, selecting their favorite picks.
The survey results were finalized, with the top eight books chosen. Eight visually engaging gardens will be created based on books, including “Alice in Wonderland,” “Peter Rabbit,” “The Wizard of Oz,” “The Color Purple,” and “The Very Hungry Caterpillar.”
Purdue University Extension Educator Gina Anderson led efforts to design the individual book gardens. Anderson and fellow Master Gardeners researched plants that would uniquely suit each garden, tying in elements from selected books.
The Book Gardens will be an annual project, with changing book themes each year. In case of inclement weather, this event will have a rain date of Thursday, April 27th.
