Other courses in the Genealogy for Kids series:

Monday, October 15, 2018 – 5:00-5:45 pm – What Is A Family Heirloom?

Participants will learn about family heirlooms and how those heirlooms, and their family members, fit into history.  Children are encouraged to bring in a family heirloom to talk about with others in the group. They are also encouraged to bring something of theirs and explain why it’s special to them.  Located in the Strassweg Auditorium.

Monday, October 29, 2018 – 5:00-5:45 pm – What Are Ancestors?

Having learned about generations and living relatives, this class will teach about ancestors, or those family members who lived before we were born.  We will create ghost and pumpkin charts to show the generations beyond grandparents and how they connect. Located in the Indiana History Room.

Monday, November 5, 2018 – 5:00-5:45 pm – How We Relate

Just as important as understanding how we relate to our family, is exploring how we are the same and how we are different.  Children will create a Grandparent Pyramid to show what types of things their grandparents like or enjoy doing, and identify what their differences are and what they have in common.  Located in the Applegate Room.

Monday, November 19, 2018 – 5:00-5:45 pm – Who Is In My Family?

We will talk about the word “family” and what it means.  Not all families are the same and family can include anyone that you are around all the time.  Your family might even include pets! We will make family turkeys to show the members of our family.  Located in the Applegate Room.

Monday, December 10, 2018 – 5:00-5:45 pm – Sharing Your Story

Participants will learn about ways to share their stories with future generations.  We will highlight time capsules and video diaries, which are great ways to share your history with family of the future.  Instructors will demonstrate how to do these things and how to keep them safe so that they are still around in the future.  Children will begin planning for their time capsule and share with others in the group what they want to put in it. They will also write down what they would talk about in a video diary.  Located in the Indiana History Room.
