I was going through the archives, looking for a picture, and I came across this framed patch from SHOT (Space Hardware Optimization Technology) Avian Development Facility. As this summer’s Summer Reading Club theme is A Universe of Stories, I thought this might be a good opportunity to highlight a local connection to NASA.
SHOT, now called Techshot, was founded in 1988 and is currently located in Greenville, Indiana. Techshot began with a project to grow chicken embryos in a space-based incubator. This program was called “Chix in Space.” The first unit was launched on the Challenger in 1986, but was destroyed in the liftoff explosion. In 1989, “Chix in Space” was successful on board the shuttle Discovery. Techshot continues to work with NASA on a variety of products and services for space missions.
This patch was on board the shuttle Endeavour as it delivered a payload to the International Space Station in 2001. It will be on display at the Floyd County Library on July 20, 2019 for our Curiosity Dome Planetarium Moon Landing program. Please come by and see it!
