Happy New Year! Are you making any reading resolutions? If you haven’t thought about it yet, here are some ideas:

If you want to read more this year, you might consider setting a reading goal on GoodReads and tracking what you read or downloading or creating a paper reading log (might I suggest this reading log from one of my favorite bloggers?).

Read more deeply

Or maybe you’re fine with the amount you’re reading, but you’d like to read more deeply. Consider joining a book discussion group. We have several that meet monthly at the Library, even some that have virtual options in case you’d rather not leave the house. Check out the January and February options for Library book discussions:

  • Dusting Off the Classics (led by Christopher Proctor, meeting in person and on Zoom) – reading Beloved for Tuesday, January 4 (register here!) and Rebecca for Tuesday, February 1 (register here!)
  • Reading the Rainbow LGBTQ+ (led by Christopher Proctor, meeting in person and on Zoom) – reading The Whale: A Love Story for Thursday, January 20 (register here!) and Ziggy Stardust & Me for Thursday, February 17 (register here!)
  • Monday Mystery Book Group (meeting in person only) – reading The Lost Man for Monday, January 24 (register here!) and Death in Focus for Monday, February 28 (register here!)

Read more widely

Or maybe you read deeply enough for your liking, but you’d like to expand what kinds of books you’re picking up. Consider joining a reading challenge to break you out of your comfort zone a little bit. A reading challenge might also feel helpful if you find it hard to narrow down what to read next. Here’s a handy guide to help you decide! You can find tons of these on the internet, but personal favorites of mine are Book Riot’s Read Harder Challenge and the Pop Sugar Reading Challenge.

Read the whole thing

Maybe there’s a certain series or author that you’ve been meaning to read. 2022 could be the year to read a long series you’ve been meaning to get to, reread a favorite series, or hunt down all the books by your favorite author. If our Library doesn’t own every book you’re looking for, we can easily request materials from other libraries for you at no cost. You can even request them yourself through the Statewide Reciprocal Circulation System (SRCS). Or ask a librarian to help – we’d love to help you get the books to meet your goals and interests.

Or, accept your reading life as it is

There’s no reason to challenge yourself unless you want to. Even if you’re reading less than you used to, your Library still loves you. And we love you no matter what you like to read. Take it easy on yourself and maybe don’t set a goal or challenge this year. Challenge yourself to read what you want when you want and not to feel guilty if you’re not reading. Your Library is here to support your reading life, no matter what genre you prefer or what you like to read about or how little or how much you read.
