The Indiana Room has added a new collection to our NewspaperArchive subscription: the African American Newspaper Collection. You can now search and browse more than 100 historic African American newspapers from across the U.S., with dates ranging from 1850 to 2016.
The best way to learn about Black history is through primary sources, and this resource provides access to unique perspectives on regional, national, and international affairs that were often left out of mainstream, predominately-white media. The newspapers also include valuable genealogical information, such as:
- birth and marriage announcements
- obituaries
- legal notices
- advertisements for local businesses and events. Highlights from the new collection include the Cleveland Gazette, The Broad Ax (Chicago), The Baltimore Afro-American, the Washington Colored American, and more.
