It’s been my privilege and pleasure to serve on the committee for the Indiana Early Literacy Firefly Award for the past few years.  Our committee accepts nominations of recently published books for young children and decides on a ballot of five excellent books that support the early literacy practices of reading, writing, singing, playing, and talking.  Then children under age 5 in Indiana can vote on the winner!

This year, with the health crisis going on, the Firefly Award has gone digital.  Children can watch videos of each of the five books being read and vote online, if they don’t have access to the physical books themselves.  Here are the books and videos (with yours truly reading them):

B is for Baby by Atinuke, illustrated by Angela Brooksbank (2019) – Click here for the video

Don’t Blink! by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, illustrated by David Roberts (2018) – Click here for the video

Firefly Home by Jane Clarke, illustrated by Britta Teckentrup (2019) – Click here for the video

Pirate Jack Gets Dressed by Nancy Raines Day, illustrated by Allison Black (2018) – Click here for the video

The Rabbit Listened by Cori Doerrfeld (2018) – Click here for the video

Here’s where you can submit a child’s vote, and here’s a Program Guide that could help extend the experience with fun activities.

Happy reading and stay safe!
