The days following Thanksgiving, are often filled with excitement and the rush to find the perfect gift for your loved ones. But before Cyber Monday, and online catalogs, people relied heavily on newspapers and paper catalogs to find out what that year’s hot ticket items were.

At the Floyd County Library, we offer access to NewspaperArchive, a collection of digitized newspapers for Indiana and other states that date back to the early 1800s! Through using the NewspaperArchive, I have gathered a few eye-catching advertisements from the 20th century. Maybe these will give you some ideas for your loved ones.

Gifts advertised around 100 years ago ranged in all kinds! Some included practical gifts like appliances, and furniture, as well as luxury gifts. This is just a taste of some of the advertisements, illustrations, and information you can find in the historic newspapers!
