Have you been watching His Dark Materials on HBO? I have! And this is one of my favorites fantasy series of all times. If you’ve been watching or hearing about the series, you might want to pick up the books (they are awesome!).
Start with the original trilogy:
- The Golden Compass (published in England as The Northern Lights), also available on downloadable e-book and audiobook via Overdrive
- The Subtle Knife, also available on downloadable e-book and audiobook via Overdrive
- The Amber Spyglass, also available on downloadable e-book and audiobook via Overdrive
Then read The Book of Dust prequels. The first two are out and I can only hope there are more to come!

- The Secret Commonwealth, also available on downloadable e-book and audiobook via Overdrive
And if you just can’t get enough, make sure you also check out Philip Pullman’s essay collection on writing, Daemon Voices: On Stories and Storytelling.
These books all make great gifts for teens and adults watching the series. I’d recommend the fiction books for grades 6 and up. And they are fabulous winter reading!
