Have you ever heard of Geocaching? It is a real-world treasure hunting game and you can do it anywhere! It is a great way to welcome the warmer weather without spending any money!
So, what is Geocaching? It is “an outdoor recreational activity, in which participants use a mobile device and other navigational techniques to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches” or “caches”, at specific locations marked by coordinates all over the world.” All you need to do to get started is download the Geocache app and make an account. You search for caches depending on your location, and it is really fun to make a day out of searching for multiple caches in your area. It is also fun to look for them when you are on a trip or in a new area!
Caches can be in any kind of container, big or small, and usually at least contain a log book for you to sign. Some larger caches contain goodies to swap, so be sure to bring some little items to leave behind! Some caches are disguised as fake rocks or other items. Some are hidden in trees or have magnets attached. Some caches are like mini escape rooms that need to be opened with puzzles and combination locks!
Some caches are located in hard to reach areas and take a bit of trekking to find, and some are perfect for beginners or young kids and are wheelchair accessible. We have an easy one for beginners set up at the Galena Branch full of little doodads to trade!
Once you become a Geocaching pro, you can create and hide your own cache!
