Looking for the next graphic novel that you just can’t put down? Look no further than the Graphic Novel Crew’s monthly book discussion.
Each month the Graphic Novel Crew (Or, GNC, if you don’t want to say all that) reads a graphic novel that is beautifully illustrated and tells a gripping story about different times and places in society, always from the point of view of a child.
On top of the chance to read a good graphic novel, there is also a discussion lead by the library’s own Adrienne. Since each of the stories that the GNC read focus on some sort of social issue, the discussion combined with the book itself helps people learn more about very important social/cultural events.
But maybe you don’t really like discussing the books you read. That’s alright. There is still a chance for you to have fun at the GNC’s meetings. Every month, after the discussion, the GNC hosts some sort of drawing activity courtesy of Holley. These activities vary from month to month, but can include things such as creating your own short comics, or drawing characters from the story.
This month, the GNC read a book called Guts. Guts tells a true story of author Raina Telgemeier, and her struggles with anxiety as a tween. Telgemeier combines humor and truth to bring a story that has been praised for ‘normalizing’ mental illnesses like anxiety. Guts is a heartfelt story, that I recommend to anyone struggling to overcome their anxiety, or anyone who wants to understand what that struggle is like.
But don’t worry if you missed out on that discussion. Next month the GNC will be reading This was our pact by Ryan Andrews. Andrews writes about the tradition of the Autumn Equinox Festival, where people light paper lanterns and float them down the river. Legends say that once the lanterns are out of sight, they will float up to the Milky Way. To see if the legends are true, Ben and his group of ride their bikes along the river, chasing after the lanterns as they go on this magical adventure.
The discussion for This was Our Pact will be held on February 22nd, starting at 4:00 pm. Also, join us for our March and April discussions where we will be reading The Crossover by Kwame Alexander, and When Stars are Scattered by Victoria Jamieson and Omar Mohamed. Each discussion take place at 4:00pm on the last Wednesday of each month.
