I want to tell you a little bit about this gem of a book called “Unlikely Animals” by Annie Hartnett. This book was devoured by me last weekend, and has become my favorite book of 2023 so far. If you are a fan of contemporary fiction and magical realism, this is the book for you!
In the small town of Everton, New Hampshire, Emma Starling was born with a special gift. She has the natural ability to heal people. When she graduates high school, she loses her way and her natural-healing gift. What is she going to do? The entire plan was to go to medical school and work in a hospital emergency room healing people. What she becomes is a medical school dropout who moves back to her tiny town and sees what has become of the family and friends she left.
This book is filled with every emotion you can fathom. Many themes are incorporated in this book as well, such as:
- family relationships and expectations
- friendships that ebb and flow
- realizing how to take care of yourself before you can take care of others
