Libraries are NOT just for books anymore! If you have not visited your local library recently, it is time to come through our doors. You may be surprised!

Public Library locations around the country have evolved into vital community centers offering a plethora of classes, computer and device instruction, e-sports, homework help, friendship and connection, a food pantry, social service connections, safe Halloween Bashes, and Winter Holiday festivals, storytimes, lectures, art gallery displays, healthy habits programs, concerts, theater and so much more. Your local library is kind of a “one stop shop” and almost everything is free! (except for 10 cent black & white photocopies and 25 cent color photocopies!) All this… and books! (Yes, we have those too!)

As you may have read in a previous Blog post, January is “National Hobby Month,” so there is no better time to check out your local library branch and learn a new skill!

Many patrons have been asking for sewing and quilting instruction. (The library has sewing machines available for check out!) Beginning on January 29, The Floyd County Library is hosting a FREE monthly beginner quilting class for children aged 9-18. Click here for more information.

This class series will additionally be offered at the Galena Branch, beginning March 4! Click here for more information. The Galena class will be open to ALL AGES, 9 years old through adult!

The “Quilt Block-A-Month” class will take place monthly. Patrons may register and attend one class, or all twelve months. Each month a different quilt block will be taught. No previous sewing experience is required. Skills learned will include: how to use a sewing machine, how to choose fabrics, how to sew a straight line, how to hand sew, how to thread a needle and tie a knot, and more.

All materials will be provided free of charge. Sewing machines will be provided as well.

Here are the first blocks we will be teaching (January, Februaary and March):
