Manga is an incredibly popular and widely-known phenomenon in the world of graphic novels and comic books. At our library the collection of English translations of Japanese comics takes up most of a wall in the teen department and check out often. Although they’re not as popular as Japanese comics, and they don’t have their own wall at the library, a surprising number of popular comic books are French (French comics are called bandes dessinées or BDs). Some of the most well-known French comics are the Asterix the Gaul strips by René Goscinny and Albert Uderzo and Hergé’s Adventures of Tintin, but did you know the popular Smurfs cartoons were also based on French comics by Belgian artist Peyo?
