I know it might seem too early to be thinking about Back to School, but the time is now to request picture books about starting a new school year! Here are some great back to school picture books to share with the young students in your life.

I Got the School Spirit by Connie Schofield-Morrison. This cheerful book will have you tapping your toes and chanting along as a spirited young girl makes her way to the first day of school. This one’s perfect for kids who love to sing and dance.

I Will Be Fierce! by Bea Birdsong. It’s a brand new day and our young narrator turns her day at school into an epic fairytale quest in this book about making the ordinary extraordinary. Kids who need a little motivation to make each day their best may appreciate this one.

The King of Kindergarten by Derrick C. Barnes. If you have a little one starting Kindergarten this year, this is a perfect, joyful book to inspire confidence and excitement about the first day of school. It’s also available as an e-book on Overdrive or an e-audiobook on Overdrive.

Miss Bindergarten Gets Ready for Kindergarten by Joseph Slate. Miss Bindergarten is getting her room all ready for a new class of kindergarteners and they’re getting ready for their first day of school. A kid for each letter of the alphabet shares part of their morning routine as Miss Bindergarten works furiously to get the classroom all ready in this bouncy, colorful picture book.

Miss Nelson is Missing by Harry Allard. Okay, this one’s not exactly a “back to school” book, but it’s one of my favorite school stories for the picture book crowd. When the kids in Room 207 get out of control again, their mild-mannered teacher Miss Nelson disappears, only to be replaced with the super strict Viola Swamp. Can the kids survive a sub long enough to find their beloved Miss Nelson? Also available as an audiobook readaloud on Hoopla.

My First Day by Nguyen Quang Phung. Along in a wooden boat with a paddle, a brave boy navigates over crashing waves and eerie forests in the Mekong Delta to make his way to the first day of school. This is a visually stunning book about bravery and determination.

We Don’t Eat Our Classmates by Ryan T. Higgins. In this funny take on the first day of school, young t-rex Penelope is excited to go to school, but she has a problem… she can’t break her habit of eating her friends! They’re just too  yummy! What’s a young dinosaur to do? Also available as an e-book with audio on Overdrive.

Wemberly Worried by Kevin Henkes. This is my favorite book to read with young kids who may be a little anxious about starting the first day of school. Wemberly worries about everything, including the first day of school. But when she meets a fellow worrywart in her class, they both realize that school is too much fun for worries!
