Hispanic Heritage Month runs from September 15 to October 15, and there’s no better time to look into book written by and about our Hispanic neighbors! There are many wonderful writers worth checking out, from classics like Pablo Neruda and Gabriel Garcia Marquez to newer voices like Valeria Luiselli and Cristina Henriquez, but because of the connection to October, I wanted to highlight a newer title that’s got a lot of people excited.
Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia was released in June to widespread acclaim. It is set in 1950s Mexico, and follows bold debutante Noemà as she rushes to a country house in the countryside after her newlywed cousin sends a letter begging for help. From then on, she becomes embroiled in the mysterious machinations of the fading aristocratic family and their decrepit, possibly-haunted manor. This is a haunting psychological thrill ride with a glamorous atmosphere, and at only 301 pages, you’ll find it a quick read. If you like the Gothic classics like Rebecca and Jane Eyre, you’ll love Mexican Gothic, which is also available as an ebook on OverDrive/Libby.
Get on the list for it now, before Kelly Ripa and Mark Consuelos get their adaptation on Hulu and the line becomes enormous!
