Floyd County Library would like to invite everyone to join in paying tribute to the generations of Hispanic and Latinx Americans who have positively influenced and enriched US history, society, and culture throughout Hispanic Heritage Month: September 15 – October 15!

Hispanic Heritage Month BannerWhat is Hispanic Heritage Month?

Hispanic Heritage Month started in 1968 as Hispanic Heritage Week under President Lyndon Johnson and was expanded by President Ronald Reagan in 1988 to cover a 30-day period starting on September 15 and ending on October 15. It was enacted into law on August 17, 1988, on the approval of Public Law 100-402.

Why is Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 – October 15?

September 15 is the anniversary of independence for Latin American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Nicaragua. Mexico’s Independence Day is September 16, and Chile’s is September 18. Also, Columbus Day, or Día de la Raza, which is October 12, falls within this 30-day period.

Why is it called “Hispanic” Heritage Month and not “Latino” Heritage Month?

Language, and how people identify and describe themselves, are constantly evolving. “Hispanic” and “Latino” are often used interchangeably to describe people whose ethnicity traces to Latin America. The US Government uses “Hispanic” as an ethnic identity in the US Census, however, it is up to individuals how they prefer to identify themselves.

How do we celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in the US?

The Smithsonian Museum of the American Latino is a great place to start learning more about Hispanic and Latino Americans. Established in 2020, the Museum “advances the representation, understanding and appreciation of Latino history and culture in the United States.” Check out their expertly curated virtual exhibits and online resources. Support local Latino-owned businesses, enjoy foods, drinks, art, history, film, and cultural events and activities celebrating Hispanic- and Latino-American cultures.
