Did you know that May is National Get Caught Reading month? There are many reasons to read and many benefits to getting caught while reading – namely influencing others to read as well! If you have children or teens around, one of the best ways to encourage a love of reading is to set the example yourself. So how should we celebrate this wacky holiday? I’m glad you asked.

Read Outside

Now that the weather is getting nicer, try reading outside in your backyard, at the park, or on the patio of your favorite restaurant. Maybe even try a book with an eye catching cover or bright colored spine to really make sure people take notice!

Use E-Books on Your Phone

The next time you are in line at the grocery store or waiting your turn at the DMV pull out your phone and read an e-book. There are so many apps now that you can use such as Libby or Overdrive (which use your library card) or the Kindle app, Apple Books both let you purchase e-books.

Try a Magazine

When was the last time you picked up a magazine and read something light and breezy just for fun? I know a lot of people think that reading “doesn’t count” unless it is scholarly high-brow material – and that is simply not true! We have many magazine options here at the library for free, or the next time you stop in a gas station you could treat yourself!

Leave Evidence

If you live with other people try leaving your books around the living room, the kitchen, or even in the bathroom! You never know what might inspire someone else to pick up a book and start reading.

Now matter how you celebrate, I sure do hope that you get caught reading!
