The Force is with us this Saturday as the Floyd County Library launches a library-wide Star Wars celebration. We’ll have crafts, games, and activities for all ages. Among the activities will be the ever-popular Star Wars movie-making station where you can make stop motion movies with Star Wars action figures. Did you know a lot of the props and spaceships from the original Star Wars were made from recycled materials and bits of old model kits? You can make your own sci-fi robots and space crafts at our shipyard and droid factory makerspace table. Adults and older kids may want to test their knowledge at the Star Wars trivia contest beginning at 2 PM (with blue milk punch provided for refreshment). And as always, we’ll be visited by costumed characters from a galaxy far, far away with the 501st Legion – a non-profit organization that participates in charity events and free activities with movie-quality costumes.
Our Star Wars Day finale will be Dr. David West Reynold’s presentation: “Writing Star Wars Books: A Look Behind the Scenes at Skywalker Ranch” in which the local author and former Lucasfilm employee will share his experience writing the Star Wars: Incredible Cross-Sections and Star Wars: The Visual Dictionary, what it was like to work with George Lucas, and what he was given access to in the Lucasfilm archives. A special exhibit tying in to this lecture is on display now at the library for a limited time this summer. The exhibit includes unique concept art and other material related to the books’ production.
